Ever since I read The Beautiful Fall by Alicia Drake I’ve wanted to take a trip to Marrakesh. The way Yves Saint Laurent was inspired by everything around him in the city made me want to explore this beautiful place. This past February me and two of my closest friends took a girls trip to the city.
We stayed in the heart of The Old Medina at the cutest little Riad Sirocco d’Amour Marrakesh. We stayed in the 2 bedroom suite in this boutique hotel. The staff and accommodations were amazing. If you are looking to stay in the middle of The Old Medina I would recommend Sirocco d’Amour. During our stay we were given a local cell phone which came in handy when our cell phones didn’t have service.
I’m not that big on shopping when traveling. However when you travel to Marrakesh be prepared! I came home with a lot more than I expected. From hand woven bags to wool decor pieces to dishes! The souks will have all that you can imagine. Bargaining is key here because most shops have the same thing so keep looking if they don’t want to meet you at the price you are willing to pay. One of the shop owners will want your sale and take your offer.
After some serious shopping we stopped by Nomad to have an early dinner. The lamb burger is a must! Another great lunch spot just across the square is Cafe Des Epices which happens to be owned by Nomad. This is another great spot to grab breakfast or lunch. On our way out I stumbled upon the cutest little shop Chabi Chic. I purchased cute postcards and a adorable black & white cup set with gold trim. The store also has a an online shop and they ship world wide!
There are plenty of things to do in the Old Medina. We found a rooftop terrace at Hotel El Kennaria that had pool tables, music and shisha. They also served the best mint tea I’ve ever had! Just down the street is a really good late night eating spot called Roti D’or which served their version of chicken shawarma wraps with fries! I think we ate there once a day after we discovered this little gem.
Just outside the Old Medina is called the “new city” which is were all the large hotels, restaurants and night life are located. We explored a little bit of everything from Comptoir Darna for live entertainment and belly dancers to their largest club Theatro. We also discover a cool bar called African Chic that had a live band the kept everyone dancing all night long!
Another great dinner spot with an international menu was Le Palace. Downstairs there is live music and a bar. Amazing service and food.
One of the highlights of Marrakesh to me was going to the spa at La Mamounia! This hotel is absolutely beautiful! I enjoyed the most relaxing afternoon after my massage at the pool. If you aren’t looking for a spa treatment you can buy a day pass for the pool.
