What I’m Packing in My Hospital Bag as a First-Time Mom Expecting Twins

As a first-time mom, expecting twins no less, the idea of packing my hospital bag felt both exciting and overwhelming. With so much advice floating around online—TikToks, Instagram posts, blogs—it can be hard to sort through what you actually need versus what might just take up unnecessary space. Thankfully, my birthing hospital provided a list of essentials to get me started. Let me tell you, this list was much simpler than some of the ones I’d seen online!
But here’s the thing: I’m a firm believer that just because you’re packing the “basics” doesn’t mean your hospital bag can’t reflect your personality or add a little joy to such a monumental experience. After all, this will likely be my first and last pregnancy (I mean, twins!), and I want to savor every bit of it—even the hospital stay.
The Basics (And Why They’re Perfectly Fine)
The hospital recommended a straightforward list of essentials:
- 2–3 pairs of pajamas (my stay is expected to be 4–6 days due to my planned c-section)
- A robe
- Nursing bras
- Toiletries (think toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, face wash, etc.)
- A towel
- Slippers
- A comfortable going-home outfit
- A water bottle (preferably one with a straw)
- A phone charger
Nothing too crazy, right? These items ensure I’ll have everything I need for a comfortable stay. That said, I couldn’t resist putting my own spin on the essentials to make my hospital bag feel me.

Making the Hospital Bag Mine
Here’s where the fun comes in: I want to feel confident, comfortable, and, let’s be honest, a little fabulous while welcoming my boys into the world. Since pink is my favorite color, I’ve added a few special touches to my hospital bag to bring some joy to the experience.
- Pink Delivery Gown: Yes, I bought a pink delivery gown. It’s comfortable, practical, and makes me feel good. Plus, it’s a fun way to welcome my boys while embracing my personal style.
- Cute PJs for First Photos: For those precious first photos with my babies, I’m packing a pair of super cute, comfy PJs (also pink, naturally). I even plan to take a few minutes to do my makeup for the photos—because why not?
- A Robe I Love: My hospital suggested a robe, so I picked one that makes me feel cozy but also put-together. Bonus points if it matches the vibe of my PJs!
Packing for Comfort and Convenience
Let’s face it: having twins is going to be a whirlwind, so I’m also including a few practical items to make my stay more comfortable.
- Playlist & Speaker: I love music, so I’m bringing my Sonos speaker to create a calming environment in my hospital room. I also added headphones in case I want some quiet, personal listening time.
- Chargers & Extension Cord: A long charging cord is a hospital-bag MVP since outlets are often inconveniently placed. I’m also bringing a backup charger, just in case.
- Water Bottle with a Straw: Staying hydrated is key, and I’ve been told a straw makes drinking water post-delivery way easier. I found a cute one to bring along.
- Belly Band: To help with post-surgery recovery and support, I’m packing a belly band to wear after delivery.
- Snacks: Breastfeeding is said to make you hungry, so I’m packing some easy, healthy snacks like nuts and dried fruit to have on hand.
Since my twins are winter babies, I’ve put some extra thought into my going-home outfit. After all, I’ll want to feel warm, cozy, and comfortable after a c-section. I decided on an oversized funnel-neck sweater paired with soft knit pants. The loose fit will be gentle on my recovering body while still looking chic enough for those first moments outside the hospital with my baby boys. Paired with my favorite pair of comfy slip-on shoes, this outfit feels like the perfect mix of function and style.
No matter how you choose to dress for going home, the key is to prioritize comfort—especially if you’re recovering from surgery. That doesn’t mean you can’t look cute too!
The “Extras” I’m Bringing
Beyond the essentials, there are a few bonus items I’m packing to help me feel more prepared and pampered.
- Portable Bidet: While the hospital provides a squirt bottle, I found a portable bidet that seems much easier to use. I figure this will make post-delivery care just a little more manageable.
- Nipple Cream: Breastfeeding moms swear by this, so it’s coming along. Better to be over-prepared!
- Take Advantage of What the Hospital Provides: Instead of over-packing pads, postpartum undies, or other bulky items, I plan to use what the hospital provides—and take extras home with me. Pro tip: don’t be afraid to stock up on those freebies!
Packing my hospital bag turned out to be more fun than I expected. Once I stripped away the “noise” from social media and focused on what I needed to feel comfortable, the process became less stressful and more personal.
Whether it’s a delivery gown in your favorite color, snacks to keep you fueled, or a playlist that makes you feel calm and empowered, I think it’s so important to pack things that bring you comfort and joy. After all, this is one of the biggest moments of your life!
To all the mamas-to-be out there: don’t overthink it. Stick to the basics, add in a few personal touches, and trust that you’ll be ready. Now, all that’s left for me to do is wait for my twin boys to make their grand entrance. Wish me luck!
